Hole-In-One Contest Winner: Jim Armstrong!

Golf Tournament 'Surprise Celebrity Guest'

Tournament Coordinator, Claude Shaver, promised a 'Surprise Celebrity Guest'. Unfortunately the cost to invite Chi Chi Rodriguez (from Orlando), didn't fit our budget, so we still found an autographed golf ball, in our 'goodies bag', by C.C. Rodriguez and got a chance to meet our own Countryway 'Regular' celebrity: John Rodriguez... (I think he signed autographs later...)

Jim Armstrong receiving $250. for his 'hole-in-one' on #1.
(Thanks to a generous donor) - Presented by Claude Shaver, assisted by Joann Kowalski

"Checking Keith's ticket numbers very carefully..."

"And the winner is.... 952-015"

Checking Raffle Ticket Numbers for the next big prize...

"I wonder if he'll draw our raffle ticket numbers..."

"And the winner is.... 952-017"

Everyone wins a door prize, Especially if your name is Pam...

Pam wins again...

Our Special Friends:  Mr. & Mrs. Billy O'Hair...

Billy and his wife, Debbie, looking on as Claude reads about Billy O'Hair's life. He was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, excelled in athletics, and loved baseball. He was scouted by the Tigers, Orioles, Reds, and Indians. He accepted a scholarship at Toledo University, but always wanted to be a police officer. The head scout for the Tigers allowed him to do both. He worked out with the AAA Mud Hens in the International League (Farm team of the Detroit Tigers) and signed a lucrative contract, but a terrible car accident ended that career. Later, in Florida, Billy joined the 40's softball team and won 3 world titles in 8 years.

Billy played a little golf in Ohio, but the cold weather limited that activity, and it wasn't until he came to Florida for a vacation that the golfing bug took over and he decided to stay. Attempting to qualify for the Senior Tournament at Fox Hollow, he shot a 71, but only 3 players were selected. His good friend Steve Hensley introduced him to Countryway Golf Club, and he and his wife enjoyed the Friday night 'couple's league'.

He takes special pride in his achievement of the lowest score ever at Countryway Golf Club. That record still stands today.  On July 16, 2006 Billy shot a score of 52.

Today, Billy is a cancer survivor, lost his house, jobs, and nest egg for retirement, and the things he loves most: eating, golf and enough energy for socialization. He and his wife have decided that it could be worse, but it's hard to be positive in such dire circumstances.

This 'Friends Helping Friends' Golf Tournament is a blessing they will never forget. And everyone who participated (over 100 golfers plus others helping with registration and food preparation) will always have a special place in our hearts and prayers, as they continue a long journey.

Billy wanted to share a short poem he wrote:

"Darkness is a gentle time...
             a tranquil pause for thought,
to share one's cares, to think of the joys,
that friends like you have brought."

'FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS'

A poignant scene, culminating our 'Friends Helping Friends' Golf Tournament, as tournament leader, Claude Shaver presents our friend Billy O'Hair with $5,000.00, the total amount derived from over 100 golfers, hole sponsors, raffle ticket sales and donations. Debbie and many of us were overcome with emotion at this 'highlight of the day'.  What a wonderful experience for all of us!

"Congratulations Billy!"     "Good Luck"       "We love you, guy!"

"We Invite you to Please SIGN our Guest Book!"
